How much do birds eat?

The phrase "eats like a bird" conjures thoughts of a person who eats small amounts of food, but the phrase is grossly inaccurate when it comes to birds. Birds eat throughout the day from sunrise to sunset. In rehab we can go through 40 pounds of wild bird seed in one week, including supporting our recently released birds in the yard and the birds in our outdoor aviaries learning to fly in preparation for their freedom.

Baby birds eat very frequently, and most of them eat mainly insects until they are old enough to start managing other food items. In the wild, it takes about 6,000 insects to raise one brood of Chickadees, and an adult Barn Swallow will consume hundreds of insects each day. During peak baby bird season we purchase an average of 30,000 live mealworms per month to keep the babies, fledglings, and adults in our care happily fed.
